Harri Jones has moved to the brink of a third Porsche Equity-One Carrera Cup Australia title after winning Round 5 at Mount Panorama, the support round for the Bathurst 1000.
The McElrea Racing driver won two of the weekend's three races and finished third in the other, extending his championship lead to 235 points over David Russell. He arrived at Bathurst 146 points clear.
Race one: a kangaroo and a fifth straight win
Jones started Friday's opening race from pole after Jake Santalucia, who had topped qualifying, withdrew from the rest of the weekend with a car damaged in a late crash on Thursday.
Jones got a strong start, led by 0.7 seconds at the end of the first lap and controlled the race from there. A kangaroo on the circuit near Forrest's Elbow brought out the safety car with about six minutes remaining, setting up a one-lap dash, but Jones was not challenged at the restart.
It was his fifth consecutive win and the 32nd of his career. Marcos Flack finished second in his 60th race start, ahead of Russell. Title rival Clay Osborne hit the wall at Reid Park on lap two and finished 12th.
Race two: chaos at the start
Saturday's race was red-flagged seconds after the start when the lights went out before the field was ready, with reports that no five-second board was shown. The front-runners stayed put while much of the midfield took off, causing several collisions.
After a lengthy delay the race was restarted as a two-lap dash. McElrea team-mate Lachlan Bloxsom led from the front to claim his maiden Carrera Cup win in his 59th start, with Russell second and Jones third.
Race three: lights to flag
Jones started Sunday morning's final race from pole and led all 11 laps, winning by 0.7 seconds from Russell. Dylan O'Keeffe was third, matching his best result of the season, with Flack fourth.
Bloxsom, Angelo Mouzouris, Max Geoghegan, Osborne, Diesel Thomas and Glen Wood completed the top 10.
The victory was Jones's 33rd career win and his 13th round win. Russell finished second for the round.
In Pro-Am, Matt Slavin won the final race and took his first round win in the class, while Matt Belford extended his class lead to 47 points.
The championship moves to the Gold Coast 500 from 23 to 25 October.
