Reigning Australian Carrera Cup champion Harri Jones will race for BWT Lechner Racing, the twelve-time Porsche Supercup teams' champion, in the 2023 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

The move takes the 23-year-old Queenslander up the Porsche motorsport pyramid. He will be based in Salzburg, Austria, with the reigning drivers' and teams' champions.

The Supercup is the top one-make Porsche championship in the world and races alongside Formula 1 at key European events.

"To say I'm excited is an understatement," Jones said.

"This is the opportunity of a lifetime for me."

He said joining the most successful team in the series' history was quite simply a dream come true.

"This year we will be racing at some of the most spectacular venues in the world, including Monaco, Spa and Monza to name a few," he said, adding that he was eager to get started but knew he would have to work harder than ever to succeed on track.

Jones already knows the team. He contested the first round of the Porsche Sprint Challenge Middle East with BWT Lechner Racing in Bahrain in November 2022.

Team principal Robert Lechner said he was excited to have Jones on board, and believed his Australian Carrera Cup title showed he could compete in Europe.

"I first met Harri at the final round of the 2022 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Championship at Monza," Lechner said.

"He is a very impressive driver and athlete."

Lechner also pointed to Jones's 2022 silverware in Bahrain and his Australian Carrera Cup title, and said the whole team was very excited to see him race with them for a full season.

Jones will prepare with two more rounds of the Porsche Sprint Challenge Middle East over the next two weeks, at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi and the Dubai Autodrome.

Round 1 of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup is at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, Imola, from 19 to 21 May.
